Burning Waves Of Grain

I’ve been watching the rumors or a revived military draft with a great deal of interest. It isn’t that I’m afraid of being drafted, since I’m 34 and not in fighting shape, but the echos of selective service seem to be ringing, and I don’t like it. This story is just the latest I’ve seen that makes me think plans are being drawn up that will only be implemented after President Bush is reelected.

If a military draft is in the works, it would make sense to wait until after the November election before announcing it. While it may not cost the President a tremendous number of votes, it certainly wouldn’t gain him any, and if this election is anywhere near as close as the last one, announcing a reinstatement of the draft would just be dumb.

Ralph Nader predicted it. Democrats are calling for it. The administration denies it, but I can’t show you the official denials, since the Selective Service website is down as of this writing.

My gut tells me it is coming. Once GWB wins reelection, he will have nothing to fear politically from reinstating the draft, and involuntary servitude will once again live in the land of the free, and the home of the brave.
